nyu essay 3 ideas Your paper must offer an gatorade sales argument. It can't consist in the mere report of pill 123, your opinions, nor in a mere report of the opinions of the gatorade sales philosophers we discuss. You have to defend the claims you make. You have to simple yahoo mail, offer reasons to gatorade sales, believe them. So you can't just say: My view is that P. You must say something like: My view is that P. I believe this because. or: I find that the on the road kerouac following considerations. Gatorade Sales. provide a convincing argument for P. Similarly, don't just say: Descartes says that Q. Instead, say something like: Descartes says that Q; however, the indians following thought-experiment will show that Q is not true. or: Descartes says that Q. I find this claim plausible, for the following reasons. Gatorade Sales. There are a variety of things a philosophy paper can aim to accomplish. It usually begins by putting some thesis or argument on 101, the table for sales, consideration. Then it goes on to do one or two of the following:
Criticize that argument; or show that certain arguments for the thesis are no good Defend the argument or thesis against someone else's criticism Offer reasons to pill 123, believe the thesis Offer counter-examples to the thesis Contrast the strengths and gatorade, weaknesses of two opposing views about the on the kerouac summary thesis Give examples which help explain the thesis, or which help to make the gatorade sales thesis more plausible Argue that certain philosophers are committed to the thesis by simple way to hack yahoo mail their other views, though they do not come out and explicitly endorse the thesis Discuss what consequences the thesis would have, if it were true Revise the thesis, in the light of some objection. No matter which of gatorade sales, these aims you set for yourself, you have to explicitly present reasons for the claims you make . Students often feel that since it's clear to them that some claim is true, it does not need much argument. But it's very easy to overestimate the strength of your own position. The Teachings Of The Essay. After all, you already accept it. You should assume that your audience does not already accept your position; and you should treat your paper as an attempt to sales, persuade such an audience. Hence, don't start with assumptions which your opponents are sure to reject. If you're to have any chance of persuading people, you have to start from common assumptions you all agree to. A good philosophy paper is modest and makes a small point ; but it makes that point clearly and straightforwardly, and it offers good reasons in support of it.
People very often attempt to accomplish too much in things in room a philosophy paper. The usual result of this is a paper that's hard to read, and gatorade, which is full of on the road kerouac, inadequately defended and poorly explained claims. So don't be over-ambitious. Gatorade. Don't try to establish any earth-shattering conclusions in your 5-6 page paper. Done properly, philosophy moves at apache a slow pace. The aim of these papers is for gatorade, you to show that you understand the material and that you're able to think critically about it. To do this, your paper does have to show some independent thinking. That doesn't mean you have to come up with your own theory, or that you have to pill 123, make a completely original contribution to human thought. There will be plenty of time for that later on. An ideal paper will be clear and straightforward (see below), will be accurate when it attributes views to other philosophers (see below), and will contain thoughtful critical responses to the texts we read. It need not always break completely new ground.
But you should try to come up with your own arguments, or your own way of elaborating or criticizing or defending some argument we looked at in class. Merely summarizing what others have said won't be enough. It's even more valuable to talk to gatorade sales, each other about what you want to argue in your paper. When you have your ideas worked out pill 123, well enough that you can explain them to gatorade sales, someone else, verbally, then you're ready to sit down and start making an outline. The overall clarity of your paper will greatly depend on its structure. That is why it is hack mail, important to think about these questions before you begin to write. I strongly recommend that you make an outline of your paper, and of the arguments you'll be presenting, before you begin to write. This lets you organize the points you want to make in your paper and get a sense for how they are going to fit together. It also helps ensure that you're in sales a position to say what your main argument or criticism is, before you sit down to write a full draft of pill 123, your paper. When students get stuck writing, it's often because they haven't yet figured out what they're trying to say. Give your outline your full attention.
It should be fairly detailed. (For a 5-page paper, a suitable outline might take up a full page or even more.) I find that making an outline is at least 80% of the work of writing a good philosophy paper. Sales. If you have a good outline, the rest of the writing process will go much more smoothly. You need to leave yourself enough time to think about the topic and write a detailed outline. Of The Sophists. Only then should you sit down to write a complete draft. Once you have a complete draft, you should set it aside for gatorade sales, a day or two. Then you should come back to it and rewrite it. Several times. At least 3 or 4. Road. If you can, show it to your friends and get their reactions to it. Do they understand your main point? Are parts of your draft unclear or confusing to them?
All of gatorade, this takes time. So you should start working on your papers as soon as the paper topics are assigned. You may think that since your TA and I already know a lot about this subject, you can leave out a lot of basic explanation and write in a super-sophisticated manner, like one expert talking to another. I guarantee you that this will make your paper incomprehensible. If your paper sounds as if it were written for a third-grade audience, then you've probably achieved the 101 right sort of clarity. In your philosophy classes, you will sometimes encounter philosophers whose writing is sales, obscure and jack summary, complicated. Everybody who reads this writing will find it difficult and gatorade sales, frustrating. The authors in question are philosophically important despite their poor writing, not because of it.
So do not try to emulate their writing styles. Make the structure of your paper obvious. How can you do this? First of road jack summary, all, use connective words, like: because, since, given this argument thus, therefore, hence, it follows that, consequently nevertheless, however, but in the first case, on the other hand. These will help your reader keep track of where your discussion is going. Be sure you use these words correctly! If you say P. Thus Q. then you are claiming that P is a good reason to accept Q. You had better be right. If you aren't, we'll complain. Don't throw in a thus or a therefore to make your train of thought sound better-argued than it really is. Another way you can help make the gatorade structure of your paper obvious is by grows in brooklyn telling the reader what you've done so far and what you're going to do next. You can say things like: I will begin by.
Before I say what is wrong with this argument, I want to. These passages suggest that. I will now defend this claim. Further support for this claim comes from. Sales. For example. These signposts really make a big difference. Consider the road jack summary following two paper fragments: . Gatorade. We've just seen how X says that P. I will now present two arguments that not-P.
My first argument is. My second argument that not-P is. X might respond to my arguments in several ways. For instance, he could say that. However this response fails, because.
Another way that X might respond to my arguments is by claiming that. This response also fails, because. So we have seen that none of X's replies to to put 101, my argument that not-P succeed. Hence, we should reject X's claim that P. I will argue for the view that Q. There are three reasons to gatorade, believe Q. Firstly. The strongest objection to of the Sophists, Q says.
However, this objection does not succeed, for the following reason. Isn't it easy to sales, see what the structure of these papers is? You want it to be just as easy in your own papers. A final thing: make it explicit when you're reporting your own view and when you're reporting the views of some philosopher you're discussing. The reader should never be in doubt about whose claims you're presenting in a given paragraph. You can't make the structure of your paper obvious if you don't know what the structure of your paper is, or if your paper has no structure. That's why making an outline is so important. Be concise, but explain yourself fully. These demands might seem to pull in opposite directions. (It's as if the first said Don't talk too much, and pill 123, the second said Talk a lot.) If you understand these demands properly, though, you'll see how it's possible to meet them both.
We tell you to be concise because we don't want you to ramble on about everything you know about a given topic, trying to gatorade sales, show how learned and intelligent you are. Each assignment describes a specific problem or question, and you should make sure you deal with that particular problem. Nothing should go into simple way to hack yahoo mail, your paper which does not directly address that problem. Prune out everything else. Gatorade Sales. It is grows, always better to concentrate on one or two points and develop them in depth than to try to cram in too much. One or two well-mapped paths are better than an gatorade impenetrable jungle. Formulate the central problem or question you wish to address at homes the beginning of your paper, and keep it in mind at sales all times. Things In Room 101. Make it clear what the gatorade sales problem is, and why it is a problem. Be sure that everything you write is relevant to indians, that central problem. In addition, be sure to say in the paper how it is relevant.
Don't make your reader guess. One thing I mean by explain yourself fully is that, when you have a good point, you shouldn't just toss it off in one sentence. Explain it; give an gatorade sales example; make it clear how the point helps your argument. But explain yourself fully also means to be as clear and explicit as you possibly can when you're writing. It's no good to on the road, protest, after we've graded your paper, I know I said this, but what I meant was. Say exactly what you mean, in the first place. Part of what you're being graded on gatorade, is how well you can do that. Pretend that your reader has not read the material you're discussing, and apache homes, has not given the gatorade topic much thought in advance.
This will of course not be true. But if you write as if it were true, it will force you to explain any technical terms, to illustrate strange or obscure distinctions, and to be as explicit as possible when you summarize what some other philosopher said. Use plenty of examples and definitions. Examples are also useful for explaining the notions that play a central role in your argument. Road Jack Summary. You should always make it clear how you understand these notions, even if they are familiar from everyday discourse. As they're used in everyday discourse, those notions may not have a sufficiently clear or precise meaning. For instance, suppose you're writing a paper about abortion, and you want to assert the claim A fetus is a person. Gatorade Sales. What do you mean by The Teachings of the Sophists Essay a person? That will make a big difference to whether your audience should find this premise acceptable. It will also make a big difference to how persuasive the sales rest of road jack kerouac summary, your argument is.
By itself, the following argument is gatorade sales, pretty worthless: A fetus is a person. It's wrong to The Teachings, kill a person. Therefore, it's wrong to kill a fetus. Gatorade. For we don't know what the apache indians homes author means by calling a fetus a person. Gatorade Sales. On some interpretations of person, it might be quite obvious that a fetus is grows in brooklyn, a person; but quite controversial whether it's always wrong to kill persons, in that sense of person. On other interpretations, it may be more plausible that it's always wrong to kill persons, but totally unclear whether a fetus counts as a person. So everything turns here on what the gatorade author means by person.
The author should be explicit about how he is using this notion. In a philosophy paper, it's okay to apache, use words in ways that are somewhat different from the ways they're ordinarily used. Gatorade. You just have to things to put 101, make it clear that you're doing this. For instance, some philosophers use the word person to mean any being which is capable of rational thought and self-awareness. Understood in this way, animals like whales and chimpanzees might very well count as persons. That's not the way we ordinarily use person; ordinarily we'd only call a human being a person. Sales. But it's okay to use person in this way if you explicitly say what you mean by it.
And likewise for other words. Don't vary your vocabulary just for the sake of variety. If you call something X at the start of your paper, call it X all the way through. So, for instance, don't start talking about Plato's view of the in brooklyn self, and gatorade, then switch to talking about apache indians homes Plato's view of the soul, and then switch to talking about Plato's view of the mind. Gatorade. If you mean to be talking about the same thing in all three cases, then call it by the same name. In philosophy, a slight change in vocabulary usually signals that you intend to be speaking about something new. Using words with precise philosophical meanings. Philosophers give many ordinary-sounding words precise technical meanings. Things To Put In Room 101. Consult the handouts on Philosophical Terms and Methods to make sure you're using these words correctly. Don't use words that you don't fully understand. Use technical philosophical terms only gatorade where you need them.
You don't need to explain general philosophical terms, like valid argument and road jack, necessary truth. Gatorade Sales. But you should explain any technical terms you use which bear on apache homes, the specific topic you're discussing. Gatorade Sales. So, for instance, if you use any specialized terms like dualism or physicalism or behaviorism, you should explain what these mean. Child Grows. Likewise if you use technical terms like supervenience and the like. Even professional philosophers writing for other professional philosophers need to explain the special technical vocabulary they're using. Different people sometimes use this special vocabulary in different ways, so it's important to make sure that you and your readers are all giving these words the gatorade sales same meaning.
Pretend that your readers have never heard them before. Presenting and assessing the views of others. Then ask yourself: Are X's arguments good ones? Are his assumptions clearly stated? Are they plausible? Are they reasonable starting-points for X's argument, or ought he have provided some independent argument for them?
Make sure you understand exactly what the position you're criticizing says. Students waste a lot of time arguing against views that sound like, but are really different from, the in brooklyn views they're supposed to sales, be assessing. Remember, philosophy demands a high level of precision. It's not good enough for you merely to get the general idea of somebody else's position or argument. You have to get it exactly right. (In this respect, philosophy is more like a science than the other humanities.) A lot of the work in philosophy is making sure that you've got your opponent's position right.
You can assume that your reader is stupid (see above). But don't treat the philosopher or the views you're discussing as stupid. If they were stupid, we wouldn't be looking at them. If you can't see anything the view has going for it, maybe that's because you don't have much experience thinking and arguing about the view, and so you haven't yet fully understood why the view's proponents are attracted to way to mail, it. Try harder to gatorade, figure out hack, what's motivating them. Philosophers sometimes do say outrageous things, but if the view you're attributing to a philosopher seems to be obviously crazy, then you should think hard about whether he really does say what you think he says. Use your imagination.
Try to figure out what reasonable position the philosopher could have had in gatorade mind, and direct your arguments against that. In your paper, you always have to explain what a position says before you criticize it. If you don't explain what you take Philosopher X's view to be, your reader cannot judge whether the apache indians criticism you offer of X is gatorade sales, a good criticism, or whether it is pill 123, simply based on a misunderstanding or misinterpretation of X's views. So tell the reader what it is you think X is saying. Don't try to tell the gatorade reader everything you know about X's views, though.
You have to go on apache homes, to offer your own philosophical contribution, too. Only summarize those parts of gatorade, X's views that are directly relevant to in brooklyn, what you're going to go on to do. Sometimes you'll need to argue for your interpretation of X's view, by citing passages which support your interpretation. It is permissible for you to discuss a view you think a philosopher might have held, or should have held, though you can't find any direct evidence of sales, that view in the text. When you do this, though, you should explicitly say so. Say something like: Philosopher X doesn't explicitly say that P, but it seems to on the road, me that he's assuming it anyway, because. When a passage from a text is particularly useful in supporting your interpretation of some philosopher's views, it may be helpful to quote the passage directly. (Be sure to specify where the passage can be found.) However, direct quotations should be used sparingly.
It is seldom necessary to quote more than a few sentences. Often it will be more appropriate to paraphrase what X says, rather than to quote him directly. When you are paraphrasing what somebody else said, be sure to say so. (And here too, cite the pages you're referring to.) Quotations should never be used as a substitute for your own explanation. And when you do quote an author, you still have to explain what the sales quotation says in your own words. If the quoted passage contains an argument, reconstruct the argument in apache indians more explicit, straightforward terms. If the quoted passage contains a central claim or assumption, then indicate what that claim is. You may want to give some examples to sales, illustrate the author's point.
If necessary, you may want to grows, distinguish the author's claim from other claims with which it might be confused. Sometimes when students are trying to explain a philosopher's view, they'll do it by giving very close paraphrases of the philosopher's own words. They'll change some words, omit others, but generally stay very close to gatorade sales, the original text. For instance, Hume begins his Treatise of Human Nature as follows: All the perceptions of the The Teachings of the Essay human mind resolve themselves into gatorade sales, two distinct kinds, which I shall call impressions and The Teachings Sophists, ideas. The difference betwixt these consists in the degrees of force and liveliness, with which they strike upon sales the mind, and way to yahoo mail, make their way into gatorade sales, our thought or consciousness. Those perceptions, which enter with most force and violence, we may name impressions; and under this name I comprehend all our sensations, passions, and emotions, as they make their first appearance in the soul. In Brooklyn. By ideas I mean the faint images of these in thinking and reasoning. Sales. Here's an example of how you don't want to paraphrase: Hume says all perceptions of the mind are resolved into two kinds, impressions and ideas. The difference is in how much force and liveliness they have in our thoughts and consciousness.
The perceptions with the simple mail most force and violence are impressions. These are sensations, passions, and emotions. Ideas are the faint images of our thinking and reasoning. Gatorade Sales. There are two main problems with paraphrases of this sort. In the first place, it's done rather mechanically, so it doesn't show that the author understands the text. Indians Homes. In the second place, since the author hasn't figured out what the text means well enough to gatorade, express it in his own words, there's a danger that his paraphrase may inadvertently change the meaning of the text.
In the example above, Hume says that impressions strike upon pill 123 the mind with more force and liveliness than ideas do. My paraphrase says that impressions have more force and gatorade sales, liveliness in our thoughts. It's not clear whether these are the same thing. In addition, Hume says that ideas are faint images of impressions ; whereas my paraphrase says that ideas are faint images of our thinking . These are not the same. So the author of the pill 123 paraphrase appears not to gatorade, have understood what Hume was saying in apache indians homes the original passage.
A much better way of explaining what Hume says here would be the following: Hume says that there are two kinds of 'perceptions,' or mental states. He calls these impressions and ideas. An impression is a very 'forceful' mental state, like the sales sensory impression one has when looking at a red apple. An idea is on the road kerouac summary, a less 'forceful' mental state, like the idea one has of an apple while just thinking about it, rather than looking at it. Sales. It is not so clear what Hume means here by 'forceful.' He might mean. Don't be afraid of mentioning objections to your own thesis. It is better to bring up an objection yourself than to hope your reader won't think of it. Explain how you think these objections can be countered or overcome. Of course, there's often no way to grows in brooklyn, deal with all the objections someone might raise; so concentrate on gatorade, the ones that seem strongest or most pressing.
So it's OK to ask questions and raise problems in your paper even if you cannot provide satisfying answers to them all. You can leave some questions unanswered at apache indians homes the end of the sales paper. But make it clear to the reader that you're leaving such questions unanswered on purpose . And you should say something about how the question might be answered, and about what makes the homes question interesting and relevant to the issue at gatorade sales hand. If something in a view you're examining is unclear to you, don't gloss it over. Call attention to the unclarity. Suggest several different ways of apache homes, understanding the view.
Explain why it's not clear which of these interpretations is correct. If you're assessing two positions and sales, you find, after careful examination, that you can't decide between them, that's okay. It's perfectly okay to say that their strengths and weaknesses seem to be roughly equally balanced. But note that this too is a claim that requires explanation and reasoned defense, just like any other. Apache Indians Homes. You should try to gatorade, provide reasons for this claim that might be found convincing by someone who didn't already think that the two views were equally balanced. Sometimes as you're writing, you'll find that your arguments aren't as good as you initially thought them to be. You may come up with some objection to on the jack summary, your view to gatorade sales, which you have no good answer. Things 101. Don't panic. If there's some problem with your argument which you can't fix, try to sales, figure out why you can't fix it.
It's okay to change your thesis to one you can defend. For example, instead of writing a paper which provides a totally solid defense of view P, you can instead change tactics and write a paper which goes like this: One philosophical view says that P. This is a plausible view, for the following reasons. However, there are some reasons to be doubtful whether P. One of these reasons is X. Jack Summary. X poses a problem for the view that P because. It is not clear how the gatorade sales defender of P can overcome this objection. Or you can write a paper which goes: One argument for P is the 'Conjunction Argument,' which goes as follows. At first glance, this is a very appealing argument.
However, this argument is faulty, for the following reasons. One might try to pill 123, repair the sales argument, by. But these repairs will not work, because. I conclude that the Conjunction Argument does not in of the Sophists Essay fact succeed in gatorade sales establishing P. Writing a paper of these sorts doesn't mean you've given in to the opposition. After all, neither of these papers commits you to the view that not-P. They're just honest accounts of how difficult it is to find a conclusive argument for P. P might still be true, for all that. Then come back to the draft and pill 123, re-read it.
As you read each sentence, say things like this to yourself: Does this really make sense? That's totally unclear! That sounds pretentious. Gatorade Sales. What does that mean? What's the connection between these two sentences? Am I just repeating myself here? and so on. Make sure every sentence in your draft does useful work.
Get rid of any which don't. In Brooklyn. If you can't figure out sales, what some sentence contributes to child in brooklyn, your central discussion, then get rid of it. Even if it sounds nice. Gatorade Sales. You should never introduce any points in your paper unless they're important to your main argument, and pill 123, you have the gatorade room to really explain them. If you're not happy with some sentence in child grows your draft, ask yourself why it bothers you.
It could be you don't really understand what you're trying to sales, say, or you don't really believe it. Make sure your sentences say exactly what you want them to say. For example, suppose you write Abortion is the same thing as murder. On The Jack Summary. Is that what you really mean? So when Oswald murdered Kennedy, was that the gatorade sales same thing as aborting Kennedy? Or do you mean something different? Perhaps you mean that abortion is a form of grows, murder. In conversation, you can expect that people will figure out what you mean.
But you shouldn't write this way. Even if your TA is able to figure out what you mean, it's bad writing. Sales. In philosophical prose, you have to be sure to say exactly what you mean. Also pay attention to the structure of your draft. When you're revising a draft, it's much more important to work on the draft's structure and overall clarity, than it is to clean up a word or a phrase here or there. Apache. Make sure your reader knows what your main claim is, and what your arguments for that claim are. Make sure that your reader can tell what the point of every paragraph is. It's not enough that you know what their point is.
It has to be obvious to your reader, even to a lazy, stupid, and mean reader. If you can, show your draft to your friends or to other students in the class, and get their comments and advice. I encourage you to do this. Do your friends understand your main point? Are parts of your draft unclear or confusing to gatorade sales, them? If your friends can't understand something you've written, then neither will your grader be able to understand it.
Your paragraphs and your argument may be perfectly clear to you but not make any sense at all to someone else. Another good way to check your draft is to read it out The Teachings of the Essay, loud. This will help you tell whether it all makes sense. Gatorade Sales. You may know what you want to The Teachings Sophists Essay, say, but that might not be what you've really written. Reading the paper out loud can help you notice holes in gatorade your reasoning, digressions, and child grows, unclear prose. You should count on sales, writing many drafts of your paper. At least 3 or 4!! Check out the following web site, which illustrates how to revise a short philosophy paper through several drafts. Notice how much the paper improves with each revision: Writing tutor for Introductory Philosophy Courses http://web.williams.edu/wp-etc/philosophy/jcruz/jcruz/writingtutor/. Also, don't begin with a sentence like Webster's Dictionary defines a soul as.
Dictionaries aren't good philosophical authorities. They record the grows in brooklyn way words are used in gatorade sales everyday discourse. Many of the same words have different, specialized meanings in philosophy. It's OK to end a sentence with a preposition. Pill 123. It's also OK to split an gatorade infinitive, if you need to. (Sometimes the easiest way to say what you mean is by splitting an pill 123 infinitive. For example, They sought to better equip job candidates who enrolled in their program.) Efforts to avoid these often end up just confusing your prose. Do avoid other sorts of grammatical mistakes, like dangling participles (e.g., Hurt by her fall, the tree fell right on Mary 's leg before she could get out of the gatorade way), and the like.
You may use the word I freely, especially to tell the reader what you're up to (e.g., I've just explained why. Now I'm going to consider an argument that. ). Don't worry about using the verb is in brooklyn, or to be too much. Gatorade Sales. In a philosophy paper, it's OK to use this verb as much as you need to. You shouldn't need to use these secondary readings when writing your papers. The point of the papers is to hack, teach you how to analyze a philosophical argument, and present your own arguments for or against some conclusion. The arguments we'll be considering in class are plenty hard enough to gatorade, deserve your full attention, all by pill 123 themselves.
Can you write your paper as a dialogue or story? But neither should your papers be too short! Don't cut off an argument abruptly. If a paper topic you've chosen asks certain questions, be sure you answer or address each of those questions. Please double-space your papers, number the pages, and include wide margins. We prefer to get the gatorade sales papers simply stapled: no plastic binders or anything like that. Include your name on the paper. And don't turn in your only copy! (These things should be obvious, but apparently they're not.)
You'll be graded on three basic criteria: How well do you understand the to put in room issues you're writing about? How good are the arguments you offer? Is your writing clear and well-organized? We do not judge your paper by gatorade sales whether we agree with its conclusion.
In fact, we may not agree amongst ourselves about what the pill 123 correct conclusion is. Gatorade. But we will have no trouble agreeing about whether you do a good job arguing for things, your conclusion. More specifically, we'll be asking questions like these: Do you clearly state what you're trying to accomplish in your paper? Is it obvious to gatorade sales, the reader what your main thesis is? Do you offer supporting arguments for the claims you make? Is it obvious to apache indians homes, the reader what these arguments are?
Is the structure of your paper clear? For instance, is it clear what parts of your paper are expository, and what parts are your own positive contribution? Is your prose simple, easy to read, and gatorade sales, easy to understand? Do you illustrate your claims with good examples? Do you explain your central notions? Do you say exactly what you mean? Do you present other philosophers' views accurately and apache homes, charitably? Explain this claim or What do you mean by sales this? or I don't understand what you're saying here This passage is unclear (or awkward, or otherwise hard to read) Too complicated Too hard to things to put in room, follow Simplify Why do you think this? This needs more support Why should we believe this? Explain why this is a reason to believe P Explain why this follows from what you said before Not really relevant Give an example?
Try to gatorade sales, anticipate these comments and avoid the need for them! Your paper should do some philosophical work. Here are some more interesting things our student could have done in his paper. He could have argued that B doesn't really follow from A, after all. Or he could have presented reasons for on the jack kerouac summary, thinking that A is false. Or he could have argued that assuming A is an illegitimate move to make in a debate about whether B is true. Or something else of gatorade, that sort.
These would be more interesting and satisfying ways of Sophists, engaging with Philosopher X's view. Responding to comments from gatorade, me or your TA. Your rewrites should try to go beyond the simple way to hack yahoo specific errors and problems we've indicated. If you got below an A-, then your draft was generally difficult to read, it was difficult to see what your argument was and gatorade sales, what the structure of child grows in brooklyn, your paper was supposed to be, and so on. You can only gatorade sales correct these sorts of failings by rewriting your paper from scratch. (Start with a new, empty window in Essay your word processor.) Use your draft and the comments you received on it to construct a new outline, and write from that. Keep in mind that when I or your TA grade a rewrite, we may sometimes notice weaknesses in unchanged parts of sales, your paper that we missed the first time around. Or perhaps those weaknesses will have affected our overall impression of the paper, and we just didn't offer any specific recommendation about fixing them. So this is indians, another reason you should try to gatorade sales, improve the apache indians whole paper , not just the passages we comment on. It is possible to improve a paper without improving it enough to raise it to the next grade level. Sometimes that happens. But I hope you'll all do better than that.
Most often, you won't have the opportunity to rewrite your papers after they've been graded. So you need to teach yourself to gatorade sales, write a draft, scrutinize the draft, and on the road jack summary, revise and rewrite your paper before turning it in to gatorade sales, be graded. Naturally, I owe a huge debt to the friends and simple way to, professors who helped me learn how to write philosophy. Gatorade. I'm sure they had a hard time of it. If you're a teacher and you think your own students would find this web site useful, you are free to point them here (or to to put, distribute printed copies).
It's all in the public good.

Contacting the PO to gatorade sales “sell” your application or to pill 123 express differences in scientific opinion related to sales the reviewers’ comments will not affect the likelihood of funding. There are additional resources at NIH’s Grants and child grows Funding web site that should prove useful as you consider the best strategy for obtaining a NIH grant. A few of gatorade, these resources are outlined below. For most, success comes from persistence and practice. Most investigators must submit multiple applications before they achieve success in obtaining support for their research. Feedback obtained from peer reviewers, and the experience gained from the peer review process are often cited as important experiences for learning to prepare a successful grant application. For example, investigators who received R01 awards in child grows in brooklyn, FY 2015 submitted an average of 5.1 R01 applications in the past five years. An application that is not funded upon the original submission has a much better chance of being funded upon sales, resubmission. In 2015, the summary success rate for original R01 applications was 13.1%, whereas the success rate for resubmission applications was 33.5%.
This information and much more is available in the NIH Success Rate tables on the RePORTer web site. Finding the gatorade best application strategy for your situation. Each Institute and Center (IC) balances many factors as its selects applications to consider for funding. Indians Homes? Understanding these factors can help you prepare your application. Among the most important factors are the overall impact score and percentile score your application received, although other factors enter into gatorade, the funding decision. Each IC has a unique funding policy and many ICs publish their current funding policy on their web site. One important factor that every IC considers in making its funding decisions is the balance of short-term versus longer duration grants it supports. Historical information about the number of R21, R01 and apache indians other activities funded by each IC is gatorade sales also available in the NIH Success Rate tables. Another important factor taken into account in road kerouac, making funding decisions is the Next Generation Researchers Initiative, whereby meritorious R01-equivalent applications with Early Stage Investigator PD/PIs and Early Established Investigator PD/PIs will be prioritized for funding. Information about the scientific priorities of gatorade, each of the jack summary ICs can be found in their strategic plans. In addition, your assigned program officer is available to help you understand the complexities of the NIH grants system as it is implemented in gatorade, the IC assigned to in room 101 your application.
The NIH Deputy Director for Extramural Research, Mike Lauer, posts new information about NIH grants, including information about peer review, success rates, and gatorade sales perspectives on NIH?wide grants policies and much more on his blog, Open Mike, each week. The information is intended to help researchers and other members of the grows in brooklyn grants community better understand the NIH grants system. We hope these resources will be useful to you as you work to obtain support for your research from the gatorade NIH! Your overall impact score is the average of the 1 to 9 scores of each voting reviewer, times 10.
If you receive a numerical score you are probably in the top half of applications reviewed by that section since about half of the applications in a study section typically are discussed and receive an overall impact score (see the website on the Peer Review Process for more information about grows in brooklyn, scoring). Gatorade? Those applications in the lower half do not receive an overall impact score. The critiques of these applications are not discussed at the review meeting, and the summary statement indicates SRG Action: ++. Things To Put 101? Although not discussed, they do receive critiques and criterion scores provided by the assigned reviewers. Gatorade Sales? Your application has a primary assignment to one of the NIH ICs, and may have one or more secondary assignments (which means the application could be considered for funding by apache, either IC see question B.3 for more information regarding primary and gatorade secondary IC assignments). Some ICs publish their payline on their website. The payline is the impact score or percentile ranking at which the likelihood of on the kerouac, funding goes from high to low. Having a score less than or equal to the payline is a good indication, but not a guarantee of funding; check with the PO indicated on the summary statement.
Also, some ICs may skip applications within their payline or reach beyond the payline to fund an application to maintain mission focus, balance portfolios or limit redundancy. The paylines, which are published by gatorade, some of the ICs, apply only to the current fiscal year, which includes three cycles, and runs from the hack beginning of October to the end of September. Most applications reviewed during the gatorade summer for cycle I are considered for pill 123 funding in gatorade, the following fiscal year. While all reviewers are instructed to justify their numerical scores with appropriate text, variability exists among reviewers in the extent to which they describe the strengths and weaknesses of the in room scored criteria. All applications are reviewed by three (or more) reviewers thus providing you with multiple viewpoints of the scientific merit of gatorade sales, your application. All discussed applications also have a resume and summary of the discussion included in the summary statement.
Thus, even if one of the pill 123 critiques provides a relatively scant written justification of a criterion score, there may be sufficient information in the rest of the sales summary statement for indians you to make informed decisions about your next submission. Your PO also can help in interpreting your summary statement and sales he/she may have listened to or attended the review meeting. The availability of the JIT link in the Commons or the things to put receipt of an email JIT request should NOT be construed as an indicator of a possible award. JIT request e-mails are sent automatically to the PI/PD for most grant applications receiving a numerical impact score of 40 or better. You should consider the resubmission application when you can address the gatorade sales weaknesses described in the summary statement. Often, additional preliminary data are needed to pill 123 address the criticisms. Therefore, you may need to skip a due date or two and plan on including the results from additional experiments. Note that the standard due dates for resubmission applications are often later than those for new applications. An application can be resubmitted up to 37 months after the original application’s due date; after that, it must be submitted as a new application and not refer to the previous review.
However, as the time increases between the original application and the resubmission, reviewers may expect more preliminary data, as evidence that the investigator is gatorade sales productive and of the Essay committed to the project. Alternatively, you may discuss with your Program Officer the possibility of submitting a new application rather than a Resubmission application. This issue should be considered on gatorade sales, a case-by-case basis. Read the things summary statement carefully and note weaknesses that you could address in a reasonable length of time. The introduction of your resubmission application should address all of the weaknesses described in the summary statement. If you disagree with a reviewer’s statement, explain why, and provide additional information.
Avoid responses that could be seen as argumentative. Sales? Ask a colleague to read the reviewers’ critiques and your responses prior to resubmission, to confirm that you have addressed the critique in a way that is apache indians informative and gatorade non-confrontational. Generally, the introduction is summary limited to one page unless otherwise specified in the FOA or Table of Page Limits. For example, an exception is made for R25, Ts, Ds and some K applications, to allow a 3 page introduction to gatorade the resubmission application. Identifying individual changes in the text of the specific aims, research strategy and other application attachments is no longer required (NOT-OD-15-030).
It is to put in room sufficient to outline the changes made to the Resubmission application in the Introduction attachment. The Introduction must include a summary of substantial additions, deletions, and changes to the application. It must also include a response to weaknesses raised in the Summary Statement. For most RFAs that have a single receipt date, all applications will be considered new. Some RFAs have multiple receipt dates and allow resubmission applications to the same RFA (designated with the grant number suffix “A1”). The text of gatorade sales, each RFA should clearly state which types of applications are allowed (new, resubmission, renewal, revision). If you submit a new application to a PA and then submit to an RFA, you can subsequently resubmit to gatorade the PA as an A1. For more information on submission following an indians homes, RFA review, see policy notice NOT-OD-09-100. In most cases, two or more applications that have scientific overlap in the experiments proposed are not allowed in peer review at the same time, even if one is to an RFA and gatorade the other(s) to a PA/PAR/PAS. There are exceptions to on the jack kerouac this rule. Gatorade Sales? NIH allows subprojects of Program Project Grant applications to be submitted as research applications (R01, R03, R15, R21, etc.) in the same cycle. Beginning the article with all of these facts and figures has a couple of strengtheing effects on Goodman’s argument. First, by starting out with hard evidence, Goodman lays the apache indians groundwork of his own credibility. He’s not just writing an opinion piece – his opinion is backed by the truth. This will bring the readers onboard and make them more likely to trust everything else he says. Second, because Goodman presents these facts without much explaining/interpreting, the reader is forced to do the math herself.
This engaging of the reader’s mind also ensures that Goodman has the reader’s attention. When the reader does the math to find a drop of sales 73 full-time foreign news correspondents employed by US papers in just 8 short years, she will find herself predisposed to agree with Goodman’s call for more professional foreign news reporting. In addition to employing facts to his argument’s advantage, Goodman also cunningly discusses the counterargument to his position. By writing about how social media and on the jack kerouac man-on-the-ground reporting has had some positive impact on the state of foreign news reporting, Goodman heads off naysayers at the pass. It would have been very easy for Goodman to elide over sales, the whole issue of pill 123 citizen reporting, but the gatorade sales resultant one-sided argument would have been much less convincing.
Instead, Goodman acknowledges things like “the force of social media during the Arab Spring, as activists convened and reacted to changing circumstances.” As a result, when he partially refutes this counterargument, stating the grows “unease” many longtime profession correspondents feel over gatorade sales, the trend of ‘citizen journalism’ feel, the reader is pill 123 much more likely to sales believe him. After all, Goodman acknowledges that social media does have some power. Knowing that Goodman takes the power of social media seriously will make the on the jack summary reader more inclined, in turn, to take Goodman’s concern about the gatorade limits of social media seriously. On The. The final piece that helps bolster Goodman’s argument that US news organizations should have more professional foreign correspondents is sales Goodman’s linguistic + stylistic choices. Goodman uses contrasts to draw the reader deeper into his mindset. By setting up the contrast between professional reporters as “informational filters” that discriminate good from bad and amateur, man-on-the-spot reporters as undiscriminating “funnels,” Goodman forces the reader to view the two in opposition and apache indians homes admit that professional filters are to be preferred over funnels that add “speculatio, propaganda, and other white noise” to their reporting.
In addition, Goodman drives the reader along toward agreeing with his conclusion in gatorade, the penultimate paragraph of the article with the repetition of the on the road summary phrase “We need.” With every repetition, Goodman hammers even further home the inescapable rightness of gatorade sales his argument. The use of “We” more generally through the article serves to make the readers feel sympathetic towards Goodman and identify with him. By employing the rhetorical techniques of presenting facts, acknowledging the other side, and using persuasive language, Goodman convinces the reader of his claim. Here are our notes on what stands out in this essay (general comments are in purple, spelling/grammar errors are highlighted in yellow): Note that not every 8/8/8 essay needs to of the Sophists have exactly the same items in here, nor do you need to argue in exactly the same way. The clarity of the argument and the lack of errors remain consistent from start to indians homes finish. Another example of this can be found in Paragraph 4. “Knowing that Goodman takes the power of social media seriously will make the reader more inclined…” could easily be the simpler “Goodman takes the power of social media seriously, which makes the reader more likely to agree…” This kind of linguistic flourish can be found in most top-scoring SAT Essays. Less Is More: Ad Reinhardt’s 12 Rules for Pure Art. Zhong Yao, Spirit Above All 1-93A , 2012, acrylic on gatorade denim. ©THE ARTIST. COURTESY PACE LONDON AND WHITECHAPEL GALLERY. When Kazimir Malevich painted Black Square (1915), whose title perfectly explains what it is, painting was pushed further into abstraction than it ever was before.
A new show at London’s Whitechapel Gallery, “Adventures of the Black Square: Abstract Art and jack kerouac summary, Society, 1915–2015” revisits Malevich’s pivotal work and looks at its influence over the next century. On view through April 6, it features artists from all corners of the world who have worked with abstraction, from Lygia Clark to Dan Flavin to Isa Genzken. Much of today’s discussion of contemporary abstraction is centered on “Zombie Formalism”—Walter Robinson’s coinage for new work that revisits (or apes, one might say) historical forms of abstraction for purely stylistic reasons. Gatorade Sales. Given the intensity of in room 101 that debate, we thought it would be interesting, for gatorade sales this week’s Retrospective column, to jump back almost 60 years, to 1957, when Ad Reinhardt took up the subject of contemporary abstraction in ARTnews . Reinhardt, who had written for the magazine previously, said that the article—titled “Twelve Rules for a New Academy”—”constitute[d] his last words on on the road art in terms of words.” He sharply criticized his formalist contemporaries, offering instead twelve ways to achieve purity in art. There would be no forms, no texture, no color, nothing—just pure blackness, as in sales, Reinhardt’s most famous paintings. Sophists. Reproduced in full below is Reinhardt’s article, which takes subtle swipes at Marcel Duchamp, Piet Mondrian, the Abstract Expressionists, and more. —Alex Greenberger. “Twelve Rules for a New Academy” How a well-known abstract painter would “give certain rules to our art” in order to “render it pure” Evil and error in art are art’s own “uses” and “actions.” The sins and sufferings of art are always its own improper involvements and mixtures, its own mindless realisms and gatorade sales, expressionisms. The humiliation and trivialization of art in America during the last three decades have been the pill 123, easy exploitations and sales, eager popularizations by the American artists themselves.
Ashcan- and on the jack, Armory-Expressionists mixed their art up with life-muck-raking and art-marketing. Social- and Surreal-Expressionists of the ‘thirties used art as an “action-on-the-public,” but succeeded mainly in expressing themselves, and Abstract-Expressionists of the ‘forties and ‘fifties using art initially as a “self-expression,” succeeded in acting upon the whole world. The business boom of the ‘twenties orphaned the alienated artist but the gatorade sales, great depression of the ‘thirties witnessed the tender engagement of art to of the Sophists Essay government. Ten years after that, the ardent marriage of art and business and war was celebrated with Pepsi-Cola in ceremonial contests called “Artists for Victory” at America’s greatest museum of art. By the ‘fifties, armies of art’s offsprings were off to school and Sunday school, crusading for art-education and religious decoration. From “Artists for Ashcan and Dust-Bowl” to “Artists for America-First and sales, Social Security” to “Artists for Victory” to “Artists for Action in Business, Religion and on the kerouac summary, Education,” the portrait of the artist in gatorade sales, America in the twentieth century shapes up into grows, a figure resembling Al Capp’s “Available Jones,” who is always available to anyone, any time, for anything at sales, all, at grows, any price. (The “ice has been broken,” the ivory-tower flooded by unschooled professionals, the gatorade, walls of the academy washed out by schooled primitives, and the sanctum-sanctorum blasphemed by pill 123 the Fauve-Folk, Bauhaus-Bacchuses and house-broken Samurai.) The conception of art as “fine,” “high,” “noble,” “free,” “liberal,” and “ideal” has always been academic. The argument of free or fine artists has never been between art and something else, but “between true art and art submitted to gatorade some other, quite different, values.” “There are not two arts, there is only one.” “No man can embrace true art till he has explored and cast out false art.” The academy of art, whether the Western or Eastern ideal, has always aimed at “the correction of the artist,” not “the enlightenment of the public.” The idea of the “academy” of art in seventeenth century, of “esthetics” in yahoo, the eighteenth, of the “independence” of art in the nineteenth century, and gatorade sales, of the “purity” of art in the twentieth, restate, in those centuries in Europe and America, the same “one point of view.” Fine art can only be defined as exclusive, negative, absolute and timeless. Of The Sophists Essay. It is not practical, useful, related, applicable or subservient to anything else. Fine art has its own thought, its own history and tradition, its own reason, its own discipline. It has its own “integrity” and not someone else’s “integration” with something else. Fine art is not “a means of making a living” or “a way of living a life.” Art that is sales, a matter of life and death cannot be fine or free art. An artist who dedicates his life to art, burdens his art with his life and his life with his art. “Art is Art, and pill 123, Life is Life.” The “tradition” of art is art “out of time,” art made fine, art emptied and purified of all other-than-art meanings, and a museum of fine art should exclude everything but fine art.
The art tradition stands as the antique-present model of what has been achieved and what does not need to be achieved again. Tradition shows the artist what not to do. “Reason” in art shows what art is not. “Higher Education for artist should be ‘liberal,’ ‘free’ and the ‘learning of gatorade sales greatness.'” “To teach and enlighten is the task of virtuous men.” “No great painter was ever self-taught.” “Artists must learn and learn to forget their learning.” “The way to know is to in brooklyn forget.” Dan Flavin, ‘Monument’ for V. The more uses, relations and “additions” a painting has, the less pure it is. The more stuff in it, the busier the work of art, the worse it is. “More is less.” The less an artist thinks in non-artistic terms and the less he exploits the easy, common skills, the more of an artist he is. “The less an sales, artist obtrudes himself in his painting, the purer and clearer his aims.” The less exposed a painting is to a chance public, the better. Child. “Less is more.” The Six Traditions to gatorade sales be studied are: (1) the pure icon, (2) pure perspective, pure line and pure brushwork, (3) the pure landscape, (4) the pure portrait, (5) the pure still-life, (6) pure form, pure color, and pure monochrome. “Study ten thousand paintings and walk ten thousand miles.” “Externally keep yourself away from pill 123 all relationships, and internally, have no hankerings in your heart.” “The pure old men of old slept without dreams and waked without anxiety.” The Six General Canons or the gatorade, Six Noes to The Teachings of the Sophists Essay be memorized are: (1) No Realism or Existentialism. “When the vulgar and commonplace dominate, the spirit subsides.” (2) No Impressionism. “The artist should once and forever emancipate himself from the bondage of appearance.” “The eye is a menace to clear sight.” (3) No Expressionism or Surrealism. “The laying bare of oneself,” autobiographically or socially, “is obscene.” (4) No Fauvism, primitivism or brute art. “Art begins with the getting-rid of gatorade sales nature.” (5) No Constructivism, sculpture, plasticism, or graphic arts.
